Vinyl Label Application Troubleshooting Tips

Applying vinyl labels is usually simple, but sometimes certain surfaces or small detailed designs can need a little extra patience. If your label is not lifting, sticking or applying as expected, don’t panic — most issues can be fixed with a few easy steps.

Here are our best troubleshooting tips for applying vinyl labels, pantry labels, storage labels, name labels and custom decals.

how to apply vinyl labels

Before You Apply Your Vinyl Label

The most important step is making sure your surface is clean, dry and smooth before applying your label.

Use rubbing alcohol or warm soapy water to clean the surface, then allow it to dry completely before applying your decal.

Avoid using Windex, glass cleaner or sprays that leave residue, as they can stop the vinyl from sticking properly.

Vinyl labels apply best to smooth surfaces such as glass, acrylic, plastic containers, drink bottles, jars, tiles and smooth painted surfaces.

My Label Won’t Come Off the Backing Paper

If your vinyl label is not lifting from the backing paper, it usually just needs more pressure.

Firmly rub over the top of the transfer tape using your fingernail, a squeegee, credit card or bank card. Make sure you rub over every part of the design, especially small letters, thin lines and detailed areas.

Once rubbed firmly, slowly peel the backing paper away from the transfer tape. Peel from a corner and keep the backing paper close to the table as you go.

If one section is still stuck, lay the transfer tape back down and rub over that area again until the vinyl lifts.

For very small or detailed pieces, you may need to gently use a toothpick to help lift the edge of the vinyl onto the transfer tape.

My Label Is Tearing When I Lift It

If your label starts to tear or a small section lifts out of place while removing it from the backing paper, don’t panic.

Place the transfer tape back over the label and rub firmly over the design again. Most of the time, the vinyl will settle back into place and once applied, the tiny tear or movement usually cannot be seen.

Take your time and avoid pulling quickly, especially with detailed designs, script fonts or small letters.

My Vinyl Label Is Lifting When I Remove the Transfer Tape

Once your label is on the surface, rub firmly over the transfer tape again before removing it.

When peeling the transfer tape away, go slowly and peel it back on a sharp angle rather than pulling straight up.

If part of the vinyl decal starts to lift, carefully place your finger over the vinyl to hold it down while you continue peeling the transfer tape away. The vinyl will stick — it may just need a little extra help while the transfer tape is being removed.

You can also lay the transfer tape back down and rub over the area again before trying to peel it away.

Some Surfaces Are Trickier Than Others

Some surfaces are easier to label than others. Smooth glass jars and acrylic containers are usually very easy, while textured, curved or flexible plastic items can take more patience.

For example, IKEA Trofast tubs and similar plastic storage tubs can sometimes be trickier because of the surface texture and shape. The vinyl will still apply, but it may need slower peeling, extra rubbing and more patience.

For best results, apply your vinyl label slowly and carefully. Do not rush the process, especially on curved tubs, plastic storage bins, drink bottles or textured containers.

Tips for Applying Vinyl Labels Successfully

Clean the surface first and allow it to dry fully.

Do not use Windex or glass cleaner before applying vinyl labels.

Rub firmly over the transfer tape before lifting the label from the backing paper.

Peel the backing paper slowly and at an angle.

If the label does not lift, rub again with your fingernail, squeegee or credit card.

Use a toothpick for tiny or detailed pieces if needed.

Once placed on the surface, rub firmly again before removing transfer tape.

Remove transfer tape slowly and hold down any lifting vinyl with your finger.

Take extra care with curved, textured or flexible surfaces.

Be Patient With Detailed Vinyl Labels

Vinyl labels are delicate when they are first being transferred, especially if they include small letters, thin fonts or detailed designs. Once applied correctly, they create a beautiful, clean finish with no clear backing around the design.

The key is to go slowly, rub firmly and take your time. Most application issues can be fixed by simply laying the transfer tape back down, rubbing again and peeling slowly.
